As a family photographer in Campbell River, BC, I have a passion for discovering the best photo shoot locations for my clients.
One of my top picks is McIvor Lake, a stunning location just 10 minutes from the city. Not only is it a favourite summer spot for swimming and paddle boarding, but it also provides breathtaking backgrounds for family portraits all year round.
Whether it’s the clear waters of the lake or the lush forests, McIvor Lake never fails to impress. During the cooler months, the area sees fewer visitors and provides a peaceful escape for quiet reflection or dog walks.
The family photoshoot in this post was a true testament to the beauty of nature, even in the midst of winter! Captured in January, the lush forest in the background still doesn’t fail to impress! And, despite a light rain shower, nothing could dampen our spirits or our passion for capturing memories.
However, for clients with small children or family members who are sensitive to cold, I often recommend opting for an indoor session or a season with milder temperatures. This can ensure a better experience for the whole family, but it definitely depends on your comfort level.
When planning an outdoor family photoshoot, consider the following:
- Choose a location that holds significance for your family. Pick a place where you and your loved ones feel comfortable and happy. You want your family photos to not only look beautiful but also tell your family’s story.
- Be prepared for inclement weather. Work with your photographer to have a contingency plan in case of rain or other unpleasant weather conditions.
- Dress appropriately. Your outfits play a crucial role in how you feel about yourself during the photoshoot. Take the time to plan what everyone will wear, so that you feel confident and comfortable during the session. This will help ensure beautiful portraits.
